King County Youth Detention Facility
Many folks in the vicinity of the 14th Avenue “whale park” waged an apparently successful campaign in 2002 to prevent the County from developing low-income housing on the park.
The neighborhood is not opposed to the development of the housing as much as to the loss of open space in an area that is already woefully underserved by parks, especially in a situation where the County was willing to sacrifice that open space while leaving a massive adjacent parking lot alone.
Much documentation of this effort exists and will hopefully be available here soon. The community is still in favor of development at the KC/DYS site along 12th Avenue, and recently sent a letter to King County Councilman Larry Gossett explaining the position.
